Every Stage of Moth Damage, Identified & Treated

Moths don’t just damage rugs — they colonise them in stages, with each phase causing its own type of destruction. Knowing what to look for is the first step. We handle the rest.

Moth Eggs in the Pile

Female moths lay clusters of eggs deep within the pile where they are invisible to the naked eye. Eggs hatch within 4–10 days in warm conditions. Our sanitation treatment penetrates the pile fully, eliminating eggs before they develop into fiber-consuming larvae.

Larval Fiber Consumption

Moth larvae are the primary cause of rug damage — they feed on keratin in wool, silk, and other natural fibers, creating irregular bald patches and thinning sections across the pile. This is the stage where most visible destruction occurs and where our treatment is most critical.

Webbing & Casings

As larvae feed and move, they spin a silky webbing along the pile surface and leave behind shed casings. This webbing traps debris and indicates an active or recent infestation. We remove all webbing, casings, and debris as part of the sanitation and hand-wash process.

Adult Moths & Reinfestation Risk

Adult moths don’t feed on fibers — but they lay new eggs, continuing the cycle. A rug returned home without full sanitation of all life stages will reinfest rapidly. Our treatment targets adults, larvae, and eggs simultaneously to break the cycle completely.

Storage-Related Infestation

Rugs stored in basements, attics, or in packaging without moth protection are prime targets. Moths seek dark, undisturbed environments with access to natural fibers. Rugs returning from storage should always be inspected and sanitised before display to prevent spreading infestation.

Antique & Heirloom Rug Damage

Antique and heirloom rugs — often made entirely of wool or silk — are the most vulnerable and the most costly to lose to moths. Their age makes them even more attractive to moths. We use a gentle, fiber-safe sanitation protocol specifically calibrated for delicate antique textiles.

Why Moths Are Silently Dangerous

By the Time You See the Damage, They've Already Been There for Months

Moth infestations are almost always discovered late. Larvae work from beneath the pile and in dark, undisturbed areas — under furniture, along edges, in folds — where they remain invisible for months while steadily consuming the fibers. When bald patches appear, significant damage has usually already occurred.
At Essy Rugs, our moth sanitation process is designed to address all life stages simultaneously — eggs, larvae, casings, and adults — through a combination of targeted treatment, thorough mechanical extraction during hand-washing, and a controlled drying environment that eliminates any surviving organisms.
We treat all natural fiber rugs, including wool, silk, cotton, and antique heirlooms, using fiber-safe methods refined over 40 years. We also advise on post-treatment storage and preventive measures to ensure moths don’t return once we’ve cleared them.

Moths Reproduce Fast — Every Week of Delay Means More Fiber Lost

In warm indoor conditions, moth larvae can complete their life cycle in as little as two months, with each female laying up to 200 eggs. If you’ve noticed thinning patches, webbing, or small moths near your rugs, the infestation is already underway. Contact us today to stop further damage immediately.

Why Rug Owners Choose Essy Rugs

We Treat the Infestation Completely — Not Just What You Can See

Surface sprays and cedar blocks are no match for an established infestation. Our approach eliminates all life stages of the moth through professional-grade sanitation combined with our signature hand-wash process.

All Life Stages Targeted — Eggs, Larvae & Adults

Most DIY treatments only address one stage. Our sanitation protocol is specifically designed to eliminate all active life stages simultaneously, breaking the reproduction cycle and preventing reinfestation after treatment.

Mechanical Extraction Through Hand-Washing

Our organic hand-wash process physically removes larvae, casings, webbing, and debris from the pile in addition to the chemical sanitation treatment — something no spray-only approach can achieve.

Fiber-Safe for Wool, Silk & Antique Rugs

Our sanitation products are carefully selected to be lethal to moth larvae and eggs while remaining completely safe for the most delicate natural fibers, including antique wool and silk rugs of any age.

Questions & Answers

Moth Sanitation FAQ

How do I know if my rug has a moth infestation?

The most common signs are irregular bald or thinning patches in the pile, fine silky webbing along the surface or backing, tiny shed casings resembling grains of rice, and the presence of small cream-coloured moths near the rug. Moths prefer dark, undisturbed areas — so damage is often found along rug edges, beneath furniture, and in areas that are rarely vacuumed or moved. If you notice any of these signs, contact us promptly — the sooner treatment begins, the less fiber is lost.

Can moth-damaged rugs be repaired after sanitation?

Sanitation stops the damage — it does not reverse fiber loss that has already occurred. However, once the infestation is completely eliminated, we can assess the rug for repair and restoration options. Depending on the extent of the damage, reweaving or pile restoration may be possible. We will give you an honest evaluation of what can be achieved after treatment.

Why do cedar blocks and moth balls not work long-term?

Cedar and moth balls work primarily as repellents or adult-moth deterrents — they do not kill eggs or larvae effectively, and their potency diminishes quickly. Once larvae are established in a rug, no surface repellent can reach them. Professional sanitation is the only way to fully eliminate an active infestation across all life stages.

Is your moth treatment safe for silk and antique rugs?

Yes. Our sanitation products and methods are specifically chosen for compatibility with delicate natural fibers including silk, antique wool, and heirloom pieces of any age. We have successfully treated hundreds of irreplaceable antique rugs without damage to dyes or fiber structure. The treatment is always combined with our gentle organic hand-wash process.

How long does moth sanitation treatment take?

Typically 4–10 business days from pickup to delivery. This covers full inspection, sanitation treatment, organic hand-washing front and back, controlled flat drying, and a final check before return. We also include written post-treatment care guidance on proper storage to prevent reinfestation.

Do you offer pickup and delivery for moth sanitation services?

Yes — free pickup and delivery is included for all services across Alabama. We schedule at your convenience, collect the rug, complete the full sanitation and cleaning process at our Montgomery facility, and return it to your door when complete at no extra charge.

Not Sure If Your Stain Can Be Removed?

Our stain specialists will give you an honest assessment based on the stain type, the fiber, and the rug’s history — before you commit to anything. Tell us what happened and we’ll tell you what’s realistic.
