Our 10-step rug washing process isn’t a checklist — it’s a discipline. Every rug passes through every stage in sequence, with care taken at each step to protect the fiber, preserve the dye, and deliver a result that lasts.

Full Rug Inspection

We examine every inch — fiber type, dye stability, construction, existing damage, and any areas requiring special attention — before any product or water touches the rug.

UV Blacklight Scan

A UV blacklight scan reveals hidden urine deposits, prior repairs, invisible stains, and fading that aren’t visible in normal light — allowing us to plan targeted pre-treatment for each affected area.

Dry Soil Removal

The rug is laid flat and beaten on both sides to dislodge and remove dry particulate matter — grit, sand, debris — that has settled deep into the pile foundation over time.

Targeted Pre-Treatment

Stains, odor zones, and pet contamination areas identified during inspection are treated with specific formulas — enzyme, tannin, solvent, or degreaser — matched to the stain type and fiber.

Organic Shampoo Application

A pH-balanced, certified organic shampoo is selected for the rug’s specific fiber type and applied evenly across the full pile surface — front and back — before any washing begins.

Full Hand-Wash

The rug is hand-washed on both sides — front pile and flat back — using soft-bristle brushes and hand pressure. A minimum of three full passes ensures soil, shampoo, and loosened contaminants are thoroughly worked out.

Deep Water Rinse

The rug is rinsed thoroughly with clean water until the runoff is completely clear — confirming that all shampoo residue, loosened soil, and pre-treatment product has been fully flushed from the pile and backing.

Enzyme Deodorization Bath

The rug is fully immersed in our live-enzyme deodorization bath — biologically neutralising any residual odor-causing organic compounds at the molecular level, rather than masking them with fragrance.

Controlled Flat Drying

The rug is dried completely flat in our temperature-controlled drying area — no machine heat, no hanging, no sunlight exposure. This prevents shrinkage, pile distortion, colour migration, and secondary mildew development.

Why a Machine Can't Do What Our Hands Can

Machine washing puts rugs through a drum cycle designed for volume, not care. The mechanical tumbling and heat stress fibers, cause dyes to bleed, distort pile, and — most commonly — fail to address what’s actually embedded in the rug’s foundation. You get a rug that looks damp and smells of cleaning product for days. That isn’t clean. That’s surface treatment.

Our 10-step hand-wash process begins with understanding what the rug needs — its fiber, its dye history, its contamination — and every step that follows is adapted accordingly. The shampoo is chosen for the fiber. The pre-treatment is matched to the stain. The drying is controlled for the construction. This is how a rug is properly cleaned.

Most Rugs Are Cleaned Less Frequently Than They Should Be

Rugs in regular use accumulate an average of one pound of embedded soil per square foot per year — most of which is invisible to the eye and unreachable by vacuuming. Professional hand-washing every 12–18 months is recommended for most rugs. Leaving it longer allows grit to work as an abrasive against the fibers from the inside, causing permanent wear before any visible damage appears.

Why hand-washing rather than machine cleaning?

Machine drum cleaning applies undifferentiated mechanical force and heat to every rug regardless of its fiber, dye structure, or construction. It cannot be adapted to individual rugs and routinely causes dye bleeding, pile distortion, shrinkage, and backing damage. Hand-washing allows us to adapt pressure, temperature, product, and technique to every rug’s specific requirements — the only approach that consistently protects and restores rather than simply wets and spins.

Do all 10 steps apply to every rug you clean?

Yes — every rug passes through all ten steps without exception. What varies is not the structure but the specific products, formulas, and techniques used at each step based on the rug’s fiber and condition. A silk rug receives a different organic shampoo than a wool rug, and a rug with no contamination passes through the enzyme bath as a preventive measure. The ten steps are the standard, not a menu of optional extras.

Is your washing process safe for silk and antique rugs?

Entirely. Our shampoos, pre-treatment formulas, and enzyme products are all selected for fiber compatibility before they’re applied. Silk and antique rugs receive specifically calibrated products and gentler hand pressure throughout. We have cleaned hundreds of silk and antique heirloom rugs using this process without damage to fibers, pile structure, or original dyes.

Why does drying take so long, and why does it matter?

A rug that isn’t fully dried flat will develop mildew in its backing — often before any smell is detectable on the surface. Machine drying with heat causes shrinkage and pile damage in natural fibers. We dry every rug completely flat in our temperature-controlled environment, which takes as long as it takes. Rushing this step to return a rug faster would mean returning it in worse condition than when it arrived.

How often should my rug be professionally washed?

For rugs in regular use, every 12–18 months is the general guideline. High-traffic rugs, rugs in homes with pets or children, and rugs in dining rooms benefit from annual cleaning. Rugs in low-traffic areas or used occasionally can go 2–3 years between washes. We’re happy to advise on the right schedule for your specific rug and household during pickup.

Do you offer free pickup and delivery?

No — Essy Rugs does not currently offer pickup and delivery services. Customers can bring their rugs to our Montgomery facility, where we complete our detailed cleaning process. Most rugs are ready within approximately 4–10 business days, depending on their condition and the services required.
