What We Repair

Every Type of Fringe & Tassel Damage, Restored

Fringe and tassel damage takes many forms — from gradual daily wear to sudden tears. Each situation requires a different approach to ensure the repair integrates seamlessly with the original rug and holds up over time.

Worn & Thinning Fringe

The most common fringe condition — years of foot traffic, vacuuming, and general wear gradually shorten, fray, and thin the fringe strands until the ends are uneven and ragged. We trim, stabilise, and where needed partially replace the most worn sections, restoring a neat, even appearance across the full width of the rug end.

Broken & Missing Fringe Strands

Individual fringe strands that break or pull free leave visible gaps in the fringe line and — more critically — expose the warp thread ends that hold the rug’s pile in place. We re-knot replacement strands directly onto the exposed warp ends, matched in colour and weight, so the repaired sections are indistinguishable from the originals.

Full Fringe Replacement

When fringe is missing entirely, beyond repair, or has been incorrectly removed or sewn under, full replacement is required. We apply new hand-knotted fringe — cotton, wool, or silk depending on the rug — secured directly to the warp thread ends or the foundation weave. Weight, twist, length, and colour are all matched as closely as possible to the original or to the customer’s preference.

Discoloured & Stained Fringe

Fringe sits at floor level and accumulates dirt, pet urine, spills, and yellowing from oxidation faster than any other part of the rug. In many cases discoloured fringe can be whitened and cleaned as part of the wider wash process. Where the discolouration is too deep or the fringe too damaged to clean effectively, replacement is the better outcome.

Tassel Repair & Replacement

Decorative tassels — found on the corners and ends of many Persian, Moroccan, and area rugs — are particularly vulnerable to unravelling, tangling, and loss. We repair intact tassels that have begun to unravel and replace missing or damaged tassels with hand-crafted replacements matched to the style, size, and fibre of the originals.

Fringe Pulling Warp Threads

When fringe is snagged, caught, or pulled — by a vacuum roller, furniture leg, or foot — it can drag the warp thread it is attached to upward into the pile, creating a row of raised, distorted pile at the rug’s end. This is both a structural and aesthetic issue. We release and re-secure the displaced warp threads before replacing the damaged fringe strands above them.

Why Fringe Matters More Than It Looks

Fringe Is Not Just Decorative — It Is the Rug's Structural Anchor

In hand-knotted rugs, the fringe is not sewn on afterwards — it is the exposed ends of the warp threads that run through the entire length of the rug and hold every pile knot in place. When fringe breaks, unravels, or is improperly cut, it exposes those warp ends and begins a process of structural unravelling that will eventually consume the pile above it if not stopped.
At Essy Rugs, every fringe repair begins with an assessment of the warp thread condition beneath the fringe line. We secure any displaced or exposed warp ends before replacing the fringe strands above them — ensuring the repair addresses the structural reality of the damage, not just its appearance. Fringe that looks fine but has loose or broken warp threads underneath it is fringe that will fail again quickly.
We work with cotton, wool, and silk fringe materials across all weights and twists, and we match new fringe to the original as closely as possible in every dimension. The result is a rug end that looks right, holds correctly, and lasts for years — not a cosmetic fix that masks a structural problem.

Fringe That Is Unravelling Will Take Pile With It — Don't Wait

When warp threads at the rug’s end begin to loosen, the pile knots tied around them above the fringe line also begin to loosen and drop. What starts as a fringe problem becomes a pile loss problem within weeks of active use. The earlier fringe damage is addressed, the less pile is affected and the less the overall repair will cost. Why Rug Owners Choose Essy Rugs for Fringe Repair

We Fix the Structure First — Then Make It Beautiful

A fringe repair that looks right but isn’t structurally sound will fail again within months. We always assess and address the warp condition beneath the fringe before any replacement work begins — because cosmetic fixes without structural integrity aren’t repairs.

Warp Thread Assessment Before Every Repair

Before replacing or repairing a single fringe strand, we inspect the condition of the warp threads beneath the fringe line. Loose, broken, or displaced warp threads are secured first — this is what makes the fringe repair durable rather than a purely cosmetic fix that will unravel again.

Matched in Weight, Twist, Length & Colour

We stock and source fringe materials across a wide range of cotton, wool, and silk weights and twists to achieve the closest possible match to the original fringe. Length is set to match the existing strands exactly. On antique rugs, we match to the aged appearance of the surviving fringe rather than approximating what the fringe looked like when new.

Hand-Knotted, Not Machine-Sewn

We knot replacement fringe directly onto the exposed warp thread ends — the same method used in the original rug's construction. Machine-sewn fringe applied over the rug's foundation looks different and does not last. Our hand-knotted approach integrates the new fringe structurally and visually with the existing rug.

Common Questions

Fringe & Tassel Repair FAQ

Is the fringe on my Oriental rug part of the structure or just decorative?
In hand-knotted Oriental and Persian rugs, the fringe is the exposed ends of the warp threads — the vertical threads that run through the entire rug and around which every pile knot is tied. It is entirely structural. When fringe breaks or is improperly cut, the warp thread ends above it are exposed and the pile knots immediately above the fringe line begin to loosen. This is why fringe damage, left unaddressed, always progresses into pile loss.
Can you match new fringe exactly to the original?
We match as closely as possible across all relevant dimensions — fibre type (cotton, wool, or silk), weight, twist, length, and colour. An exact match is rarely achievable because the original fringe has aged in ways that fresh material has not, but we work to minimise the visual difference to the greatest extent possible. On antique rugs, we match to the aged appearance of the surviving fringe, not to what the fringe looked like when the rug was made.
What if all of the fringe is already missing?
If no original fringe remains, we assess the warp thread ends at the rug’s foundation to determine the correct fringe weight and style. In many cases, the surviving warp ends are long enough to work with directly. Where they are too short or have been cut flush, we attach new fringe at the foundation weave. We discuss all options and their appearance with you before any work begins.
Can discoloured fringe be whitened rather than replaced?
In many cases yes — fringe that has yellowed or greyed from oxidation, soil, or pet contamination can be significantly brightened as part of the full rug wash process. We assess the fringe condition at pickup and advise honestly on whether cleaning will achieve a satisfactory result or whether replacement will produce a better outcome. Where cleaning is sufficient, it is always the less expensive option.
How long does fringe repair take?
Most fringe repairs — including partial replacement, full end-to-end replacement, and tassel work — are completed within 7 to 14 days from pickup to delivery. This includes any associated warp thread securing, the fringe or tassel work itself, and a final inspection before return. Where the fringe repair is combined with a full wash, the timeline extends to 10–14 days to allow for complete flat drying.
Do you offer free pickup and delivery for fringe repairs?
Yes — free pickup and delivery is included for all repair services across Alabama. We schedule collection at your convenience, complete all fringe and tassel repair work at our Montgomery workshop, and return the rug to your door when finished at no extra charge regardless of your location in Alabama or the size of the rug.
